In his journey to becoming a certified English Language Arts Teacher, Sarkawt Amir Sabir has taken a significant step by completing a 32-credit teaching licensure program through the edTPA at Portland State University. He started this program after being admitted to Grad school with PSU in the summer of 2022. The edTPA is a rigorous and performance-based assessment that evaluates a teacher candidate's ability to plan, instruct, and assess students with different learning needs. It is an Oregon requirement for licensure, replacing the Teacher Work Sample, and is used by over 600 teacher preparation programs nationwide. Sarkawt's edTPA portfolio showcases his readiness to be the teacher of record, and it is evaluated by independent, trained, third-party scorers for objective evaluation. With this achievement under his belt, Sarkawt is now planning to complete his second Master's in Education at PSU. If you have any questions about the edTPA or his journey, Sarkawt's edTPA instructor or cohort leader will be able to provide further information.
Sarkawt Sabir, a graduate student at PSU, participated in the Startalk Program in January to gain a deeper understanding of the teaching methods and practices employed in the program. His specific focus was on learning how to teach Arabic in an authentic and immersive manner. As part of his participation, Sarkawt completed a summer teaching camp at PSU, accumulating 95 hours of instruction. For his successful completion of the program, he received a certificate of completion. This experience will undoubtedly contribute to Sarkawt's ability to teach Arabic effectively, utilizing the principles and techniques learned through the Startalk Program.
Sarkawt arrived in the US on the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistantship, a nine-month program in 2014-2015 to teach Arabic Language and culture at both Reed and Lewis and Clark Colleges. The program provided an excellent opportunity to create cultural connections. As a Fulbright scholar, his primary goal was to teach Arabic, but it expanded to include activities that exposed US undergraduate students to the Middle Eastern culture, such as watching films, poetry readings, culinary demonstrations, and even dancing. During this time, he gained an understanding of different educational systems and social and cultural customs, adapting to an unfamiliar work environment. This experience allowed Sarkawt to refine his teaching skills, improve his English language proficiency, and broaden his knowledge of US society and culture. This experience has been a lifelong adventure, where he not only connected with brilliant minds, professors, and professionals but also learned that diversity and culture cannot be achieved by studying books but rather through experience.
Sarkawt was given the opportunity to participate in IYLEP, a four-week summer exchange program funded by the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, as a chaperone to a group of Iraqi high-school students. The students developed leadership and community skills and learned about American culture as they traveled across the United States.
Thesis Title: Paradise Lost: A Study of Allen Ginsberg's Selected Poems
During his postgraduate studies, Sarkawt conducted an examination of the literature of the Beat Generation, with a special focus on the poetry of Allen Ginsberg. He delved into Ginsberg's publication records, construction of literary identity, and his relationship with postmodernism. The thesis was completed at Koya University in 2012.
